In 1837 the Hamilton family planted South Australia's first vineyard at Glenelg. In 1991 fifth generation Hugh Hamilton began his own label. Today his daughter Mary Hamilton is the CEO of Hugh Hamilton Wines. They are Australia's oldest wine family.
Hugh Hamilton Wines has two vineyards in the heart of McLaren Vale: Cellar Vineyard south of their cellar door and Church Vineyard to the east. Their third vineyard lies on the north-eastern fringe of the region in cooler, later ripening Blewitt Springs. With a diverse spectrum of soils, each site yields unique fruit. Varieties range from the mainstream Shiraz and Cabernet to black sheep varieties including the Georgian Saperavi.
Hugh Hamilton Wines mascot is a black sheep. The lead wine is Pure Black Shiraz, from Blewitt Springs old vines. The single vineyard Black Blood wines, each from a different vineyard, follow.
